Kelowna’s airspace will remain closed all day as fire fighting crews continue operating amidst a provincial state of emergency.

Exemptions will be made for flights scheduled between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m., when aerial firefighting activities are grounded for the night, according to a release from Kelowna International Airport.

Airlines have added extra flights between those hours, however the airport reminds passengers that smoke can still interfere with evening flights.

Exemptions for each flight will be made on a case-by-case basis.

“These decisions are dependent on wildfire progression and are made with the safety of the community as the key priority,” the release says.

Passengers should be prepared for limited food and beverage options in the departures lounge.

Vehicles parked at the airport will not be charged for additional parking fees due to flight cancellations.
