A Kelowna pilot took off from Kelowna International Airport with some unwanted cargo, forcing a quick return to the airport after being advised by the tower this week.

A Southern Interior Flight Centre Beech 76 had just departed Kelowna airport’s runway 16 on Monday, Oct. 5, and was airborne when the tower noticed the aircraft still had a tie down rope and cement block attached to its tail.

The pilot was advised and without delay made a crosswind turn in order to make a downwind landing on runway 16.

Unfortunately, the trailing cement block shattered on impact, forcing a clean up of the runway before further traffic could land or take off.

The incident, which was noted in the Civil Aviation Daily Occurrence Report (CADORS), resulted in a couple of flights being delayed about 10 minutes while a runway cleanup and inspection took place.

Thankfully, the aircraft wasn’t damaged, no one was injured and the airport was able to resume normal operations.
