Kelowna firefighters respond to 'suspicious' mini blaze in condo complex

Kelowna firefighters responded to a mini blaze in an apartment complex early this morning that appears to have been deliberately set.

This morning, April 10 at approximately 1:15 a.m., the Kelowna Fire Department received a fire alarm activation at 1088 Sunset Dr. A subsequent 9-1-1 call followed reporting smoke on the 10th floor of the north tower, according to platoon captain John Kelly, in a press release.

The first arriving firefighters reported smoke on the second floor. A small fire had been set in a second-floor hallway but a security guard had already extinguished it using a dry chemical fire extinguisher, according to the fire department.

There was no extension of the fire and it was contained to the area where it began with some minor damage to a wall.

Firefighters ventilated the hallway of smoke and dry chemical residue. Once ventilation was completed occupants were allowed back in. The fire is suspicious and will be investigated by the RCMP, Kelly said.

The fire department responded with three engines, a ladder truck, a rescue unit and command vehicle.

The Kelowna RCMP were also on scene.
