KELOWNA - A pair of grass fires tore through Kelowna yesterday and this morning, highlighting the wildfire danger during the dry season.
Kelowna Fire Department received numerous 911 calls at around 3 p.m. yesterday, June 13, about a grass fire on the Green Way between Meyer Road and KLO Road, according to a media release. Fire personnel arrived at the scene and discovered a Rank 1 fire stretching 15 feet wide and 650 feet long.
Crews also found multiple fire sets. Crews managed to control and quickly extinguish the blaze.
The fire department says another grass fire flared up at around 9:50 a.m. today, June 14, near the Okanagan Rail Trail behind Enterprise Way. Fire personnel on the scene saw several explosions from compressed gas cylinders in a homeless shelter area.
Crews contained the fire within a 20 feet by 30 feet area. No one was at the camp during the blaze.
Investigators were called to the scene to determine the cause of the fire.
No one was reported injured at either fire.
