Kelowna Farmers' Market in urgent need of new home

The land used by the Kelowna Farmers' and Crafters' Market for years is now listed for sale for almost $13 million.

The 1.97-acre parcel at the corner of Dilworth Drive and Springfield Road is owned by Orchard Park Mall.

“We do have an agreement from the city to help us find a new location but there is nothing specific as for a location, as of now,” Alli Becker, president of the Farmer’s Market board, told iNFOnews.ca.

Members have yet to be informed. She had been waiting for official word from Orchard Park that the property had been listed before letting them know.

That listing has been up for a couple of weeks now, Marshall McAnerney told iNFOnews.ca. He and Jeff Hudson, principals with Unison HM Commercial Realty, have the listing.

The land is zoned commercial but could have six storeys or more or residential suites as zoning rules currently allow for more than 273,000 square feet of rental space, McAnerney said.

“There’s very much a housing shortage on rental, so we’ve had quite a bit of interest in that area so far,” he said.

He expects something to be built that is similar to the apartment towers next door on the former school district site. His company also handled that sale.

The list price is $12,950,000 and can be seen here.

The farmers' market has been looking for a new home for more than 10 years, Becker said.

It’s constrained by the fact that it’s considered an event so it can't relocate to land that’s in the Agricultural Land Reserve.

Ideally, it needs four acres for merchants and another two acres for parking, Becker said. Having a year-round building for the winter market would be even better.

Becker has no idea what the time lines are for relocating.

“For us, we’re really confident in that we’ve actually got the city to acknowledge they are going to help us with a new location,” she said.
