Kelowna Fan Experience postponed due to COVID-19 concerns

Kelowna Fan Experience or KFX is an annual event that will transport the Interior of B.C. into a world of superheroes, film, comics, manga/anime, Sci-Fi, fantasy, horror, gaming, performance and more. KFX, which was scheduled to start on March 20, 2020, has been postponed until this summer.

One of the city's most well-loved events is being postponed due to concerns about the coronavirus.

Kelowna Fan Experience — the comic con of the Central Okanagan — was scheduled for March 20 and it's now being put off until July.

"We are a large event and had a voluntary health assessment (we asked for this) done by Interior Health yesterday," Bonnie Gratz, artistic director of the New Vintage Theatre, said in an email.

"They did not tell us that our event should be cancelled but provided us with some guidelines to promote safety that we didn't feel we could meet since our event is over an entire weekend and has visitors from around North America. Our small organization is not equipped to be able to manage the precautions suggested for our event which typically has a participation of over 5,000 people."

Gratz said it's important to note that in no way does their decision suggest that other events - large or small - cannot be held.

"We anticipate and hope they will be," she said. "It just is that our festival is unique and is better held at an alternative time."

Everyone has been very understanding, she said, and all performers and guests have agreed to come at the new dates.

"All of the vendors/artists we have communicated with this morning have also indicated they want to come in July," she said. "So we look forward to an event equally exciting in July."

The Rotary Centre For The Arts, Kelowna Community Theatre, Black Box Theatre and Okanagan Regional Library Downtown play host to this unique show.
