The trade war with the U.S., and a fast-tracked federal election, have spurred a Kelowna woman to get in on the elbows up movement.
Heather McArthur has planned a rally in Kelowna from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 29 on Harvey Avenue between Dilworth Drive and Cooper Road.
“Canadians right now are quite united, for the most part, more so than ever,” she said. “I like the ‘elbows up’ approach to it. Instead of making it political or a particular party, it's more the unite Canada kind of perspective than partisan.”
“Elbows up” has been a rallying cry in recent weeks referencing the great hockey player Gordie Howe. It received national attention with Canadian actor Mike Myers wore a T-shirt with the words 'elbows up' on Saturday Night Live. Protests have already happened in Toronto and Ottawa denouncing president Donald Trump along with Tesla owner and MAGA supporter Elon Musk.
McArthur said it’s important to get Canadians everywhere motivated to vote and stand united as the trade war tensions escalate.
“It's just a gathering of individuals finding an opportunity to express themselves,” she said. “I think if people see that others are passionate about the election and about the cause, they might think, wait, I might have to pay attention.”
She hopes people come out with flags and banners to oppose Trump’s comments about annexing Canada.
“As Canadians, fight against the idea that someone would annex us, there's a little bit of fire in our bellies over it," she said.
“I don't care who you vote for, just show up and vote."
The federal election day is Monday, April 28.
