A Surrey man has been arrested in Kelowna and charged with assault causing bodily harm after a woman fled from his vehicle screaming for help early this morning.

According to a Kelowna RCMP media release, police got a call from a concerned citizen who reported a woman screaming for help in the 1700-block of Morrison Road in Kelowna shortly after 1:30 a.m. March 23.

Police learned from witnesses the woman had been seen leaving a vehicle and crying for help.

Police located the vehicle and attempted to stop it several times, but each time it fled driving in a dangerous manner.

The drivers erratic driving meant police did not pursue the vehicle. Officers spotted the vehicle and brought it to a standstill using a spike belt.

The driver then fled on foot, although police later caught up with the 26-year-old and he was arrested without further incident.

Police also located the woman screaming for help and say she is fully cooperating with the police investigation.

The 26-year-old Surrey man has been charged with assault causing bodily harm, failure to stop, driving while prohibited and dangerous driving.

Police ask anyone who witnessed the incident and hasn't spoken to police should contact the Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300.
