A Kelowna company’s kitchen-counter composter is the most funded Indiegogo campaign of 2021 so far.

Pela’s Lomi, a composter that uses heat, abrasion, and oxygen to speed up the breakdown of organic waste into fertilizer — similar to how earthworms break down and mix plant tissue into soil — has raised more than $6 million as of May 14.

In seven minutes, Pela sold out of its 1,000 super early-bird composters and raised more than $3 million in 10 hours following its launch on Earth Day, April 22, according to the Indiegogo site. Its initial goal was to raise $60,000. The campaign has gathered more than 15,000 backers.

The Lomi campaign has raised the most funds on Indiegogo in 2021 to date, said Samantha Van Gent, from Indiegogo.

The cheapest Lomi option is currently selling for $484 per composter.

Pre-orders of the product will be delivered in December. The money raised online will go towards mass development of the composters.

This is the first time Pela has launched an online fundraiser in this way and due to its success they’ll be launching new innovations on the platform in the future, said Kate Wilson, vice president of brand marketing with Pela, in a previous interview with iNFOnews.
