A Kelowna man who killed a total stranger on a bus in 2014 is back behind bars.

Tyler Jack Newton, 32, will spend another 46 days in jail after pleading guilty to occupying a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent for an incident that took place in November 2022.

At the Surrey courthouse Jan. 20, Newton was sentenced to four-and-a-half months jail for the offence but received 89 days credit for being in custody prior to sentencing.

Newton made headlines in 2014 when he stabbed Caesar Rosales to death in an unprovoked and brutal attack on a Kelowna city bus. He was later sentenced to seven years jail but released in 2019.

Since then he's been in and out of custody.

He made headlines again in the fall after his name was mentioned in the B.C. legislature as "another catch-and-release horror story."

Newton had been charged with aggravated assault and assault with a weapon in relation to an incident that took place in West Kelowna in December 2021 but later granted bail. He then went on the run and police issued a warrant for his arrest. He was picked up shortly afterwards.

However, in October 2022 the charges against him were stayed by the Crown.

Weeks after those charges were stayed, the prolific offender was breaking the law again and the incident occurred that he has since been sent to prison for.

Newton has a lengthy criminal record that that dates back more than 10 years and contains more than 50 criminal charges.
