Shannon Christensen started Mamas for Mamas as a Facebook group in 2014 and grew it into a national organization that battles poverty.

As with most non-profits during the COVID-19 pandemic, Christensen has found that funding for such organizations is a struggle.

So, she joined forces with honourary Mama John Oughtred to create a special line of coffee as an ongoing revenue source.

“Consistently people need their coffee,” Christensen told iNFOnews.ca. “So we partnered with Tug 6, we’re coming together to share social capital.”

Not only can people now enjoy great coffee from an ethically sourced, socially conscious local coffee producer, but can help struggling mothers are well.

It’s a project that’s been in the works for a months.

"We spent the time, got the input, changed the labels, made edits, changed them again, brought in our teams and, in the end, we made a conscious and intentional partnership to launch our Tug 6,” Christensen wrote on Facebook.

And it required a lot of coffee drinking to get the right blend.

“We tasted so much coffee I was buzzing by the end of it,” Christensen said. “I’m the kind of person whose coffee is cold before I get time to drink it.”

There are three Mamas for Mamas' blends: dark roast, medium roast and espresso. Mamas gets $3.50 for every pound sold.

The product is launching this week on line and will be available in the Kelowna Mamas for Mamas store.

Christensen wants to take it further and has joined with Mill Creek Coffee to help businesses set up coffee machines in high-traffic businesses such as car dealerships, salons or accounting offices as a way to enjoy great coffee while aiding a good cause.

Tug 6 is served at Big White and a great many Kelowna restaurants, she said.

The coffee can be ordered online at craftcoffeecanada.com under the Community heading and will soon be available through the Mamas for Mamas website.
