Kelowna's Brent Fikowski has finished in first place at the international CrossFit championships in Dubai.
Athletes from around the world competed in one of the biggest CrossFit competitions of the year from Dec. 11 to 14. The number one male competitor at the Dubai CrossFit Championship was Kelowna’s Fikowski, who finished first overall with 949 points.
According to his biography, Fikowski has been living in Kelowna for about seven years and trains at the Kelowna CrossFit gym. Of the eleven events at the Dubai CrossFit Championship, Fikowski placed first in two events, second in two and third in three events.
The second-place competitor was also a British Columbian. Patrick Vellner trains at CrossFit Nanaimo.
The men took part in events that involved, running, biking, swimming, carrying sandbags, burpee box jumps, parallette handstand pushups, deck squats and much more. They beat out other top competitors like Russia’s Roman Khrennikov, who placed third.
At Fikowski’s last big competition, the Reebok CrossFit Games, he placed 23rd but he now has another shot at that title. The Dubai CrossFit Championship was one of the sanctioned events for the Reebok CrossFit Games, and both men are now going to participate in the games which aims to find the fittest person on earth.
On the women's side of the event, Emily Rolfe of Kamloops placed sixth overall with a score of 856. Sara Sigmundsdottir from Iceland placed first with 967 points.
