We may love FOG (fats, oils, grease) for extra flavour in holiday cooking, but for drain pipes and sewer systems it can cause serious indigestion.

The No. 1 cause of sewer blockages and overflows in Kelowna are the result of cooking oil and grease poured down drains. When washed down the drain, FOG sticks to the inside of the sewer pipes on both your property and in the street and over time can build-up and block an entire pipe.

You can help prevent FOG induced basement sewer backups and keep our waste water collection systems running smoothly by adapting the following practices:

  • Never pour grease down sink drains or toilets
  • Avoid putting household chemicals down the drain
  • Put baskets/strainers in sink drains to catch food scraps and other solids, and empty them into the garbage
  • Scrape grease and food scraps into a can or other container or directly into the garbage for disposal
