After samosas caught fire in her kitchen earlier this week, a Kamloops woman is urging residents to be prepared in the event of a blaze.

Jennifer Adams was home with her two daughters the night of Feb. 15 when a pot of samosas and grease they were cooking caught fire in her kitchen. The fire quickly spread, reaching the curtains and additional oil being stored above the stove before reaching the attic through the older home's woodchip insulation.

“The pot we were using was old and warped and I couldn’t snuff the fire,” she said. “It was like a flash fire and I was trying to put it out but it got big so fast.”

Within 10 minutes, she said part of the house was blazing. She also ran back into the home on Seymour Street to try and save the cat as well as find her shoes and phone.

“The firemen saved the cat, the dogs ran out… we left with the clothes on our backs. We were in complete shock at how quickly it spread.”

“If we would have had a fire extinguisher, none of this would have happened,” she said, adding she was in the process of moving so her fire extinguisher was left at her old home.

“I’m the example of what not to do,” Adams said.

Since she didn't change the address yet on the tenant insurance she also isn’t covered. In the meantime, she is able to stay in her old home on Nicola Street until she finds a new place.

"We’re very lucky,” Adams said.

The landlord also has insurance for the structure, she said.

“When moving, it’s important to update that stuff,” Adams said.

Her daughters will be staying with her oldest daughter in the meantime.
