Kamloops woman pleads guilty to arson for setting wildfires

A Kamloops woman has pleaded guilty today to starting several small fires last spring in the Monte Lake and Lac le Jeune areas.

Angela Elise Cornish, 43, pleaded guilty to four counts of arson in Kamloops provincial court today, Jan. 26. She yet to be sentenced and remains on bail and is expected back in court in March.

Cornish was charged on May 11, 2022, accused of starting multiple fires in April and May of that year.

The investigation started in the Monte Lake area on April 30, 2022, when a resident saw smoke in the hills and a suspicious truck leaving the scene. The person took note of the license plate and reported it to police.

Others in the community reported their own encounters with the suspicious vehicle after news spread of about a potential arsonist.

Monte Lake was just entering the 2022 fire season with the memory of the massive White Rock Lake wildfire still fresh.

The circumstances of the arsons weren't discussed at today's hearing and evidence from previous hearings remains under a publication ban.

The fires were all responded to quickly and didn't cause major damage, but police said there were four fires just in the Monte Lake area on April 30.
