Do you have a gently used purse and a desire to help others? Now's your chance to help out a woman in need.

For the last three years, local community advocate Patti Phillips has been collecting purses stuffed with essentials to donate to the Women's Shelter at the Emerald House in Kamloops.

"The women that come in are usually just coming in with the shirts on their back and that's it," Phillips said. "They really don't have much of anything."

The first year she got 15 to 20 purses donated, and last year she collected 340.

"I called the shelter to see if they still needed purses this year, because we had so many last year, and they said they definitely do," she said. "That kind of shows you the need for this kind of thing."

The purses can be filled with items like lip balm, deodorant, makeup, candy, toothbrush, wallets, gift cards, small clothing items and hygiene products.

The women will be receiving the purses around Christmas, so some opt to wrap a couple little gifts for them to open on Christmas morning.

Donation can be dropped off at the North Shore Business Improvement office by appointment, at Senor Froggy's on the North Shore or Heather's Fabric Shelf.

Purses will be collected until December 16.

Call Phillips at 250-376-2411 or send an email for more information.
