A plains bison born at the B.C. Wildlife Park in Kamloops on May 1, 1995, died earlier this week at almost 27 years of age.

The bison named Mama was considered a geriatric bison and lived a very long, healthy life, according to a social media post by the B.C. Wildlife Park.

During her time at the park, Mama gave birth to two offspring called PT and Little Girl. Little Girl died a number of years ago and PT still lives at the park.

Mama’s favourite training treats were apples, carrots and grain. She formed strong bonds with her care team, voluntarily participating in target training and shifting, and would go to her station to receive a portion of her diet, the wildlife park said.

The bison could often be spotted giving herself a dust bath, scratching against her favourite tree, or lazily grazing in the pasture.

In the wild, the average lifespan for a bison is up to 15 years, and up to 25 years in human care. The long duration of her life speaks to the exceptional care she received during her time with us, and she will be missed, the wildlife park said.
