Kamloops waits for summer weather, while eastern Canada deals with heat waves

You'll need sunglasses for the first three days of the week in Kamloops as Environment Canada forecasts mostly sunny skies and temperatures near seasonal norms, but more showery weather is expected to end the work week.

More changing weather conditions are in the forecast this week in Kamloops as temperatures continue to struggle to reach the seasonal norms this time of year.

Environment Canada meteorologist Lisa Erven says the whole country has been stuck in a pattern consisting of a broad trough over western Canada and a ridge of high pressure over eastern Canada for the past month and a half.

“The country has been basically split in two, with the west under a broad trough of low pressure, getting those cooler temperatures and more showery conditions, versus eastern Canada, which has been stuck in the heat for the past several weeks,” Erven says.

A weak ridge of high pressure is building for the initial part of this week that should result in a few days of sunny skies and warming temperatures. However, another low pressure system is expected to head our way for Thursday and Friday, bringing the usual showers and cooler temperatures.

Erven says the longer range forecast hints at improving conditions over the next two weeks, but there’s still not enough solid evidence to say the present pattern will change significantly.

“The summer has been very dynamic. With how persistent this trough has been, I’d like to see a strong switch to a dominating ridge of high pressure before I could say, ‘Here comes the  heat,’” Erven says.

Ontario did experience a return to normal temperatures on the weekend, according to the Weather Network, but the change is expected to be short-lived as another heat wave is expected by the end of the week.

In Kamloops today, July 13, sunny skies and a high of 25 Celsius is expected. It will be breezy with winds west at 20 km/h this afternoon. Clear conditions and a low of 10 C is expected overnight.

Tuesday should be sunny with a high of 29 C and a low of 15 C under clear skies overnight.

Another sunny day is anticipated Wednesday with a high of 28 C and a low of 16 C.

Cloudy and unsettled conditions return Thursday with a 40 per cent chance of showers and a high of 24 C. Clouds and a 70 per cent chance of showers is expected overnight with a low of 16 C.

Friday should see a 60 per cent chance of showers with a high of 27 C and an overnight low of 16 C.

The weekend looks promising at this point with the forecast calling for a mix of sun and cloud, and highs of 29 C for both Saturday and Sunday.

Normal temperatures for this time of year in Kamloops are highs of 28 C and lows of 14 C.
