Supt. Syd Lecky is leaving Kamloops after four years in the position.
Lecky was promoted to Chief Superintendent in Northwest Territories, where he'll be stationed in Yellowknife.
"It has been a privilege for me to have served as the Kamloops RCMP Detachment Commander for the last four years. During my time here, we have worked hard with the City of Kamloops to bring to the forefront the challenges and changes presented in policing and the legal system," Lecky said in a news release.
"Although I am looking forward to this new opportunity to serve the communities of the Northwest Territories, I would be remiss not to acknowledge that it was my time in Kamloops that prepared me for such a role. It is with both excitement and a heavy heart, that I thank the people of Kamloops for our time together.”
He will remain in the position until fall of this year and the job opening is yet to be posted.
The interview process will be led by the Kamloops mayor, chief administrative officer Dave Trawin and the RCMP, with a final recommendation to be endorsed by the RCMP commissioner in Ottawa.
“I am excited for Supt. Lecky on this challenging appointment but disappointed that Kamloops will lose him as detachment commander,” Mayor Ken Christian said in a news release.
“As Officer in Charge of Kamloops, he has provided consistent and exemplary leadership through a series of disasters and emergencies unprecedented in our history. He has moved policing towards a more inclusive community police service model and laid the foundations for stronger responses to mental health, addiction, and other domestic and social challenges.”
Lecky was hired in 2018 after he headed the Terrace RCMP detachment for two years. He replaced former superintendent Brad Mueller, who transferred to the chief superintendent position of Alberta RCMP.
