A man was swept away in the North Thompson River on Friday afternoon, and police are still searching for him.
Stan Cappis, 50, was at the river with a friend and some youths near the Tournament Capital Ranch just after 3 p.m. on July 12, according to a release from police.
The incident began when two of the youths stepped off the sandbar into a fast moving part of the river.
The youths were being carried down the river so Cappis and his friend jumped in after them. The unidentified friend and the youths managed to get to shore, but Cappis was swept away in the current.
“He was last seen rounding the bend of the river,” Staff Sgt. Janelle Shoihet said in the release.
A search was launched by RCMP, police dogs, aircraft, forensic experts, Kamloops Fire and Rescue, along with numerous civilians. They searched the riverbanks immediately but could not find Cappis.
“Efforts will continue throughout the day today with the RCMP contingent being bolstered by Kamloops Search and Rescue,” Shoihet said.
Cappis is described as Caucasian, athletic, with dark hair. He was last seen wearing shorts and sunglasses.
“We are asking anyone who lives in and around the area of the North Thompson, south of the Tournament Capital Ranch to keep their eyes open for Stan and to report any information to the Kamloops RCMP, citing file 2024-22138,” Shoihet said.
Police are advising people to be cautious around water, and wear floatation devices.
