Kamloops RCMP on the trail of a police impersonator, asking for tips

Kamloops RCMP executed a search warrant at a private residence today in a police impersonation investigation.

The warrant was executed today, May 28, by the Targeted Enforcement Unit, and police are looking for any potential witnesses, according to an RCMP media news release.

“Even if that interaction occurred several years ago, if you feel someone approached you or pulled you over, but it wasn’t quite clear if they were in law enforcement, or if they indicated they were a police officer but something felt suspicious about the interaction, please contact us as soon as possible,” Const. Crystal Evelyn, Kamloops RCMP spokesperson, said in the release.

Any interaction with a vehicle, or person, with someone suspected to be impersonating a police officer can be reported to Kamloops RCMP.

The investigation follows recent allegations of impersonation made to Kamloops RCMP and other reports in the province in recent months.

“These reports are very concerning and we treat these allegations very seriously to help ensure public safety is not compromised by police impersonators,” said Insp. Jeff Pelley, Officer in Charge of Operations at Kamloops RCMP.

The penalty for police impersonation, whether it's an outfitted vehicle or dressing in a manner similar to a police officer, can carry up to five years in prison.
