Kamloops RCMP investigating downtown security guard kicking incident

Kamloops RCMP have confirmed they are investigating after a security guard was caught on camera kicking a man on the ground in downtown Kamloops.

RCMP had initially received a report that a security guard was spat at and pushed by an unknown man on the 40-block of Victoria Street, around 5:15 p.m. on March 17, according to a recent RCMP media release.

Their report suggests that this is what caused the guard to retaliate violently.

When officers arrived on the scene, they could not find the unknown man.

Police were notified about the video later, which showed a man on the ground being kicked repeatedly by a security guard.

"On March 23, the Kamloops RCMP located and reviewed further surveillance footage, allowing for further identification of the man on the ground and others present," RCMP spokesperson Const. Crystal Evelyn said in a statement.

The owner of Lapper Entertainment and Security, Ed Lapierre, confirms the security guard works for his company.

Lapierre says he anticipates disciplinary action against the guard in question, pending the outcome of the RCMP investigation.

However, he also says the security guard made a complaint about the incident to RCMP,  which has opened a file.

The other person involved in the altercation was asked to leave the area as people aren't allowed to linger around the storage facility after closing, Lapierre said, and the person then became belligerent, and spit and pushed his employee.

He says his security guard states the aggression seen on the video by his guard were "light kicks".

"The snippet of video that was sent in... did not show the whole incident," he said. "The 10-second clip doesn't do justice to what goes on down on west Victoria Street... there are constant threats and assaults to staff towards security staff and that's not just west Victoria Street."

"Guess the incident got the better of (the security guard), adrenaline kicked it, and that was it. Unfortunately, the camera wasn't rolling when he was handing out winter jackets and food at his own expense to people but it's rolling when something like this happens."

The investigation is still ongoing, and anyone with information can contact Kamloops RCMP at 250-828-3000 and reference file number 2021-8681
