Kamloops RCMP arrest shoplifter for theft, assault with weapon

A suspected shoplifter is under arrest after he produced a weapon and threatened a lost prevention officer at a Kamloops store this afternoon.

Police received a call today, Feb. 14, from a loss prevention officer who told them he had confronted a man that had stolen merchandise from a store at approximately 2:30 p.m. today, Feb. 14, according to an RCMP media release. Police do not name the store where the incident occurred.

When the loss prevention officer attempted to retrieve the stolen merchandise, the suspect produced a weapon and threatened him, RCMP say. Police do not say what kind of weapon was used.

Officers attended the area of Columbia Street West to locate a man who matched the description of the suspect. When police told him he was under arrest, he fled on foot with officers pursuing.

Police set up a perimeter in the area and located the man in the backyard of a residence.

RCMP say the man is known to police and was arrested for theft under $5,000, assault with a weapon and resisting arrest. He is scheduled to appear before a judge tomorrow.
