Kamloops Pride march cancelled, events moving online

FILE PHOTO

There will be no colourful outpouring of LGBTQ2S+ pride on Kamloops streets this year.

Kamloops Pride announced on their Facebook page that the annual festivities are cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions. This would have been the fourth year for the River City celebrations and marks the 50th anniversary of the first pride parade in New York.

The Kamloops parade and related festivities usually run during the summer months and include events like dances, coffee shop meet-and-greets, drag shows and more. Now, the organizers plan to move the festivities online.

There will be an online dance, drag show and contests over the weekend of Aug. 14 to 16. In the Facebook post, the organizers mention that an online method may make the celebrations more accessible and could reach a broader audience. All of the online events will be free to access, although Kamloops Pride will be accepting donations.

In previous years, the storefronts of downtown businesses were decorated with rainbows and displays showing support for those from the LGBTQ2S+ population. The downtown displays are one tradition that organizers hopes will continue this year despite the cancelled parade.
