Kamloops police arrest man with knife in 'family dispute'

A man is in custody after he allegedly threatened others with a large knife in what police describe as a family dispute.

Kamloops RCMP was called to Mountainview Place in Westsyde around 9 p.m. last night because the 27-year-old man was "acting erratically and brandishing a large knife in a threatening manner, causing police to respond in number," said Staff Sgt. Matias Van Laer in a new release.

Everyone else managed to get out of the home safely while police made contact with the man while in his backyard. He was arrested without incident.

Van Laer also thanked residents in the area that complied with "safety measures" taken in the area.

"Clearly, these are very serious and dangerous types of events, and we can't afford to take any chances," he said. "While we can't comment any further on the details of this ongoing investigation, we can certainly confirm that we have no more public safety concerns for that area."

The incident comes just days after a separate incident when a Kamloops man was stabbed to death. The Independent Investigations Office, B.C.'s police watchdog, is also investigating because it said police were earlier called to do a wellness check on the man later charged with the stabbing. Police were not able to locate the man for the wellness check.
