A Kamloops photographer is jumping on a trend among isolated neighbours to keep herself busy and document this period of isolation that families are now getting used to due to COVID-19.

Peggy Knaak of Sunbeams and Freckles Photography did her first trip around a Kamloops neighbourhood this week to capture front porch family moments.

“Everyone is super excited to see me… They're wearing whatever, nothing fancy. You can come out in your slippers, your pyjamas, it doesn't matter,” Knaak says. “It’s been really fun, and a boost to the spirits connecting that way.”

Knaak got the idea from North American photography groups. She originally tried to mimic the work of a photographer doing window portraits in Yellowknife, but found the glare to be too difficult to work around. She then saw a post from a photographer in New Hampshire, who encouraged others to take on the front porch portraits.

Knaak is using the project as a way to raise money for the Kamloops Food Bank. You can book a five-minute socially-distanced session and she will organize a date based off of other requests in the community. She says on her first day she had eight sessions to go to, and is now planning trips to different communities in the River City.

“I have a donate button for the Kamloops Food Bank so people can directly donate that way if they want to. They can also go directly through my business, and all I’m doing is taking what I need for my gas expenses and the rest I’ll take to the food bank in a few days,” Knaak says. “Some people have already donated directly, and I’d say on average people are donating $30 to $40 per session, so that’s going to add up really nicely. I’m excited.”

Knaak says she will continue to do these sessions as long as it’s okay for her to leave her house and do so. Click here to check out her photography page and book a session.
