Kamloops and Penticton have been chosen as the host cities for the next two BC Games in 2028.
The two cities were the first two to ever host the BC games back in 1978 when Penticton hosted the summer games and Kamloops held the winter games the following year, according to a press release from the BC Games Society issued today, May 27.
The BC Games are biennial events bringing together the province’s best athletes and coaches for four days of competition.
The society chose to go back to the event’s roots since this will be the 50th anniversary of the games.
“The BC Games are a celebration of sport and community, providing positive sport experiences for youth while generating social and economic benefits to B.C. communities. Bringing these games back to Kamloops and Penticton highlights a significant milestone and underscores the BC Games Society’s contributions to building a strong and thriving sport sector,” Tourism Minister Lana Popham said in the release.
The BC Games Society gets $2 million every year to organize the BC Summer and Winter Games.
The winter games in Kamloops are in February 2028 and will be primarily on the Tk?emlúps te Secwépemc territory within the unceded ancestral lands of the Secwépemc Nation.
The summer games will kick off in July 2028 supported by the City of Penticton and School District 67 along with 5,000 volunteers. The games are going to be on the unceded territory of the Syilx People.
“As stewards of our heritage and advocates for celebrating all athletes, volunteers and organizers, we at Penticton Indian Band are honoured to welcome the BC Summer Games once again, marking five decades of athletic excellence and community building. This milestone not only celebrates the rich sporting legacy but also underscores our ongoing commitment to fostering a culture of inclusivity, resilience and healthy living,” Penticton Indian Band’s Chief Greg Gabriel said in the release.
