An off-duty Kamloops police officer was taken to hospital after they were hit by a stolen vehicle while driving home from work early this morning.

On Jan. 5, at 5:15 a.m., the officer's vehicle was struck on the driver’s side by a stolen red Jeep Compass that ran a stop sign, according to an RCMP media release.

Police are now looking for the three suspects involved in the collision at St. Paul Street and 7 Avenue.

The suspects fled eastbound on foot on St. Paul Street.

RCMP described the suspects as all wearing dark clothing, one had a backpack, and the other had a hunched back.

The Police Dog Service Unit responded and tracked the suspects to the 700 block of Battle Street but was unable to locate them.

Evidence was seized at the scene of the crash, and officers are in the area looking for video surveillance and witnesses.

“The off-duty officer was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and is thankfully expected to fully recover in time,” Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Const. Crystal Evelyn said.

The Jeep was stolen from a motel on the 1700 block of the East Trans-Canada Highway on Jan. 4, around 6 a.m.

Anyone who witnessed the crash, or has any information related to the vehicle theft, is encouraged to contact the Kamloops RCMP at 250-828-3000 and reference file number 2022-301 for the theft, or 2022-404 for the crash.
