KAMLOOPS - Angela Veltri loved purchasing her kids Welch’s fruit snacks until she recently found a four-inch metal blade inside one of the packages.

The Kamloops mother says she was grabbing the last bag inside of the 60-pack box she had purchased at a local grocery store and noticed it was two packages still attached.

She was about to hand it to her almost three-year-old son when she noticed something unusual.

“I usually rip the bag open and give it to him and he can feed himself,” Veltri says. “But I noticed something hard in it and when I opened it up there was a four-inch blade with a rounded tip.”

Veltri says at first glance she assumed it was something that had come from the factory.

“It was pretty sharp where it had probably broken off from the machine,” she says.

Veltri called the company right away to explain what happened. She was told to send them the piece of metal so they could investigate where it came from and how it passed inspection.

A few days later, Veltri says she got a letter.

“They sent a letter and it was kind of lacklustre,” she says.

She explains the company said they would be investigating and took responsibility. They also sent her four coupons totalling just under $13 in value.

“I don’t think it even covered the cost of what I paid for so that was really disappointing,” she says.

Veltri says she decided to post a photo of the blade on social media with a sarcastic caption to alert other parents of what happened to her.

“I got quite a bit of attention, I really didn’t think it would,” she says.

Veltri says she isn't looking for more compensation, she just wanted the company to acknowledge the dangers of what would have happened if she wasn't the one that opened the package.

“Now as a parent, you have to look into your factory-sealed fruit snacks because there could be something like a metal blade in your kids’ fruit snacks,” she says. “It’s crazy and super unexpected.”

Shortly after the post was made, Veltri says the company contacted her again to offer her more coupons but the mom admits she will be staying away from the fruit snacks for the time being.

“I’m a little traumatized from the whole thing and (the company) gets it,” she says.

If there is one positive thing that can come out of this, Veltri hopes it is to remind other parents to be vigilant when checking their kids’ snacks.

“Just be aware that this does happen and check everything for your kids."
