Kamloops mayor puts used car lot up for sale as legal bills mount

FILE PHOTO - Mayor Reid Hamer-Jackson poses in front of his Kamloops car dealership in this March 2022 photo.

The mayor of Kamloops is officially selling his used car lot.

Reid Hamer-Jackson's downtown property has been put up for sale months after he suggested the option was on the table to pay his mounting legal bills.

Tru Market Truck and Auto Sales hasn't sold a vehicle since before the 2022 municipal election and the 260 Victoria Street West property is now listed for $5.6 million.

Hamer-Jackson has previously told iNFOnews.ca his legal bills related to his two defamation lawsuits and multiple code of conduct complaints were adding up and he may sell the property to fund them. He has also said he would be keeping his dealership licence and the Tru Market business itself will stay in his name. Whether it will reopen elsewhere is yet to be seen.

Just how much he has spent on lawyers since his term began and how much is outstanding isn't clear, but the bills aren't expected to stop stacking up soon as he prepares for a civil trial against Coun. Katie Neustaeter this winter.
