The mayor of Kamloops won't sign an apology letter, so his pay cheque is getting cut.
For the next six months, Mayor Reid Hamer-Jackson will only get 90 per cent of his monthly salary.
That's according to a City news release, which says in February Hamer-Jackson was given 30 days to sign an apology letter to Coun. Katie Neustaeter.
It arose out of Neustaeter's previous code of conduct complaints against the mayor, one of which found he had misled the public. Exactly what he said that was misleading isn't known because the report hasn't yet been made public.
The June 12 news release goes on to say at the end of those 30 days, Coun. Nancy Bepple handed the mayor a completed apology letter that he could have signed. He refused to sign the letter and refused to take mandatory workplace training as directed by council.
In response to his continued refusal to follow the path set by council, they voted to reduce his pay as of June 11. The order was made following comments from the mayor and his legal counsel, according to the news release.
The release adds that the apology would not, under BC legislation, be admissable as evidence in court, which appears to refer to his ongoing defamation case against Neustaeter.
