Kamloops manufacturing company fined $25,000

KAMLOOPS - A local manufacturing company is facing a hefty fine after a worker was injured on the job.

WorkSafe B.C. fined Adwood Manufacturing in October 2017 more than $25,000 fine for not properly ensuring staff know and follow safety procedures after a worker operating a ripsaw at the facility was injured.

WorkSafe says the worker shut down the saw and removed the dust hood to clean the machine. The spinning blades had not yet come to a complete stop and contacted the worker's hand, causing injury.

WorkSafe B.C. inspected the worksite and determined the machine had not been locked out when the incident occurred and no written lockout procedures were in place.

The worker had allegedly not been trained in safe work procedures for cleaning the saw, WorkSafe says in the fine report, adding that Adwood Manufacturing failed to ensure lockout devices were used when required, and failed to ensure the machinery was locked out before maintenance work was done.

"These were high-risk violations," the report says.

Adwood Manufacturing also allegedly failed to provide its workers with the information, instruction, training and supervision necessary to ensure their health and safety, according to the report.

Adwood Manufacturing has filed a notice of appeal.
