A Kamloops man is in hospital after suffering several blows to the head with a hammer this morning while his home was broken into.

The victim saw footprints going into a home currently under construction on the 1300 block of Pine Crescent this morning. While shoveling snow at the property, he noticed footprints heading up to the house. He followed the tracks into the home and was hit with the hammer from someone still inside.

He thinks two suspects first broke in around midnight, then one suspect returned to the Sagebrush home around 5:45 a.m. today, Nov. 7. The suspect then fled the scene after the attack.

He was hit in the back of the head with the hammer four or five times, according to a family member.

The victim managed to get up and follow the suspect out of the house to an alley on the 1200-block of Dominion Street, the family member said.

The suspect managed to grab a nearby set of garden shears and the victim backed away.

The victim and his family asked to remain anonymous, fearing he was targeted after another break in last month.

The suspect is described as a man who was wearing a black hoodie, black hat and a mask.

He was also captured on surveillance footage, which has since been circulated on local social media pages.

Kamloops RCMP was not immediately available to comment, but the victim's family said police were called immediately to the scene this morning.
