An unidentified man tried to steal a Salvation Army Christmas kettle in Kamloops Wednesday.

Major Orest Goyak with Kamloops Salvation Army confirmed there was an attempted kettle theft at the London Drugs on Lansdowne Street at 3:15 p.m. on Nov. 27. Members of the public stepped in to thwart the attempt.

“It was attempted but recovered, the money was recovered,” he said. “Our volunteer is OK and wasn’t harmed in the process and the police have been notified of the incident.”

The Christmas kettles are securely attached to a stand.

“They are attached and for some reason he managed to get it unattached and make off with it,” Goyak said. “We’ve taken measures to secure it further.”

He said all Christmas kettle volunteers go through safety training to respond to these types of incidents prior to doing the job.

There are 12 kettles set up in various locations in malls and outside retail stores in the city until Dec. 24.

The money raised at kettles is used to provide for families in need and the Salvation Army tries to ensure every child will have presents under the tree at Christmas.

Goyak didn’t let the incident crush his Christmas spirit.

“Our kettle campaign will continue, we’ll keep moving forward,” he said.
