KAMLOOPS - Kamloops firefighters responded to a fire that started within a garbage truck engine earlier this evening.
Kamloops Fire Rescue Platoon Capt. Darryl Cooper says a fire crews responded today, Oct. 8 at approximately 6:30 p.m. after receiving reports of a fire alarm from the building where the garbage trucks are housed on Concordia Way at the City of Kamloops Public Works and Utilities building.
“We opened the doors, found flames showing, knocked down the flames and the sprinkler system had already been activated which was keeping the fire confined to the garbage truck,” he says.
It took crews 30 minutes to get the fire under control.
“It looks like garbage, paper and that sort of thing…got into the engine compartment area (of the truck)," he says."When the diesel exhaust regeneration which burns off the diesel soot to make the truck cleaner, when it fires up, it gets really hot and that’s what started the fire,” he says.
Cooper says the garbage trucks are power-washed to avoid this issue and says the City will be looking at power-washing them more frequently in the future.
