A Kamloops designer got the surprise of her life when a stylist from Los Angeles texted her to tell her a reporter at the Oscars was wearing one of her pieces.

Delayne Dixon had some of her designs hanging in a boutique in Los Angeles.

“Stylists pull pieces they want from there and borrow them for events,” Dixon said. “They reach out to you and you approve the use of them or not, then they ship them back when they are done,” Dixon said.

Stylist Venk Modur chose Dixon’s black and gold houndstooth tweed dress with faux fur Ostridge sleeves to be worn by a reporter for Hollywood Critics Association, Rasha Goel on the red carpet at the Academy Award ceremony yesterday, March 27.

“I didn’t even know what was happening,” Dixon said. “I was watching the Oscars and then I got a text from the stylist saying his client was wearing it. I don’t like to hope for these kinds of things, there is a lot of competition. Until it happens you don’t realize how much it affects you.”

Dixon said she made the dress out of fabric she purchased at a bargain store. Everything is made by her, down to the last stitch.

Her pieces have been featured in British Vogue and showcased in Paris and New York Fashion Weeks.

“This is definitely where I want my brand to be, dressing celebrities at big events,” Dixon said. “My next step is to keep making more of those fancier couture dresses. I have to do my own promotion, sometimes I email stylists and send them my look books and hopefully they take the bait.”
