A Kamloops city councillor is suggesting B.C. Hydro stop replacing streetlights with LEDs that are too bright for residents.
Coun. Denis Walsh is bringing a motion to council that suggests a moratorium on the Crown corporation's transition from traditional fluorescent bulbs to LEDs across Kamloops.
The change, while more energy efficient, is compared to a spotlight through the bedroom windows of nearby residents by Sagebrush Neighbourhood Association president Chris Ortner.

B.C. Hydro does have other options for the LED conversion, which could include a warmer light, more similar to traditional streetlights. Another option discussed at City council last May was to install shields around each light, directing the light downward to avoid affecting residents.
Streetlights in the Sagebrush neighbourhood, near downtown, have been replaced sporadically, but most have been the whiter option between the Crown corporation's two options.

B.C. Hydro owns roughly half of the streetlights in Kamloops and is expected to complete a transition to LED lighting by 2025.
If approved at the March 15 council meeting, Walsh's motion would have staff request a meeting with B.C. Hydro to seek a moratorium on the light transition until neighbourhoods are better consulted.
