Kamloops contractor installed cameras in office bathroom renovations

A 37-year-old Kamloops man was arrested for voyeurism promptly after his release in Ontario from on similar charges.

He'll now spend another year in prison for filming young girls and coworkers while they used the toilet in Kamloops.

The man was sentenced on Sept. 22 at Kamloops Provincial Court, where the court heard he installed hidden cameras in two washrooms he was renovating in Kamloops.

His place of work and the offender's name are under a publication ban in order to protect the identities of his victims. In Justice Lorianna Bennett's written decision, he's referred to as "Mr. H."

In 2014 he installed two cameras. One camera was hidden in a paper towel dispenser with a USB cord fed through a hole in the wall. He attached another camera in a separate office washroom, where he used velcro to attach it under the sink which faced toward the toilet to record coworkers and young girls between eight and 12 years old exposing their genitals, according to the written decision.

One of the videos even showed him installing a camera.

His cameras remained focused on the toilets until they were discovered in 2016, around the same time he was arrested in Kingston, Ontario for voyeurism and possession of child pornography.

Kamloops RCMP found more than 500 images and three videos of child pornography on electronics at his home, while he faced the charges in Ontario for images on his phone which he took while visiting family in Memphis, Tennessee. One of the families he stayed with had a three-year-old daughter, according to the written decision.

He was sentenced to three years in prison in Ontario after the U.S. government failed to have him extradited to face charges south of the border.

Justice Bennett noted his offences in Kamloops were committed before the charges in Ontario and Tennessee, and he has "shown remorse" for his actions.

He was released early in Ontario on July 4, 2019, but was immediately arrested for his crimes in Kamloops.

He was released on bail until his sentence on Sept. 22, 2022.

The man pleaded guilty in Kamloops to voyeurism and possession of child pornography.

He was sentenced to one year in jail and another year on probation, according to the decision.

He cannot go near anyone under the age of 16 nor anywhere a youth is expected to be, like public parks, theatres and public swimming areas.

He will also remain registered as a sex offender for 20 years.
