Kamloops cancels Canada Day celebrations due to COVID-19

The City of Kamloops has decided to cancel Canada Day celebrations this year because of COVID-19.

The celebrations usually take place in Riverside Park, but there will be no gathering there this July 1, according to a City of Kamloops media release.

The event, which is organized by the City, the Kamloops Multicultural Society and the Kamloops Arts Council, brings in around 30,000 people to celebrate the day. You will have to wait until next summer for all of the food, entertainment and events that would have taken place.

“B.C. health officials have indicated that physical distancing measures put in place to limit the spread of COVID-19 will remain in place throughout the summer,” Kamloops Mayor Ken Christian said in the release. “While this is disappointing, we cannot lose focus of the bigger picture and the health of our residents.”

“We look forward to celebrating together in 2021," he said.
