KAMLOOPS – Don Hay has become the winningest coach in WHL history, and now the Kamloops Blazers are honouring him.
On Feb. 16, the Blazers will be hosting a pre-game ceremony before they play the Kelowna Rockets to honour Hay, according to a media release from the team.
“This milestone is a team accomplishment and recognition to all the tremendous players and staff I’ve been fortunate to work with,” Hay says the release. “This celebration is for the community. When you grow up here and have lived all your life here, you feel that a lot of the Kamloops community has helped in this achievement.”
Hay won his 743 game as a head coach in the WHL on Jan. 27 following a win against the Portland Winterhawks.
He won Memorial Cups with the Blazers in his first stint as a head coach back in the 1994 and 1995 seasons.
“We are thrilled to celebrate Don’s milestone,” Blazers president and COO Don Moores says in the release. “He was born and raised in Kamloops and to be able to accomplish this rare feat with his hometown team is something to be celebrated and remembered.”
The first 4,000 fans into the Sandman Centre will receive a commemorative puck that recognises Hay as the winningest coach in WHL history.
