Kamloops Blazers head coach assumes GM duties

The Kamloops Blazers have chosen a new general manager from within the hockey club.

Head coach Shaun Clouston will now take on the additional role of general manager, according to a press release from the Kamloops Blazers.

“After a thorough process of interviewing both external and internal candidates for the vacant general manager position, we concluded that the solutions were already within the organization,” owner and governor of the Blazers, Tom Gaglardi said in the release. "Given Shaun’s past accomplishments and resume, we have no doubt he will be successful."

Clouston led the team to two consecutive division titles in the 2020/2021 and 2019/2020 seasons, his first two seasons behind the Blazers bench.

“I want to thank Tom Gaglardi and the Blazers organization,” Clouston said in the release. “I am very honoured and grateful for the opportunity to lead this team. Kamloops is a wonderful community and a great hockey town."

Clouston boasts a record of 450 total wins during his tenures as a coach in the WHL over the past 20 years. In previous seasons, he coached for the Portland Winterhawks and Tri-City Americans, and before moving on to Kamloops, he split duties as head coach and general manager of the Medicine Hat Tigers from 2013 to 2019.

He is 15th on the all-time win records of WHL coaches, according to the Kamloops Blazers news release.

While Clouston splits his duties between general manager and head coach, Tim O'Donavan has been promoted to assistant general manager.

O'Donavan was formerly the director of hockey operations for two seasons, but he has been with the Blazers since 2009 when he joined as the team's media coordinator.

Clouston, O'Donavan and director of player personnel Robbie Sandland will work closely in all hockey related areas, according to the news release.

— This story was corrected at 12:48 p.m., July 20, 2021, to remove statement claiming Clouston had the most wins out of all active WHL coaches.
