Kamloops author Elma Schemenauer's latest novel entitled Song for Susie Epp has been published

Set in BC and her native Saskatchewan in the 1970s, the novel takes place in a city similar to Kamloops and features a bossy mother-in-law and a shocking secret.

Schemenauer provided a synopsis for Song for Susie Epp in a media release.

“Susie, daughter of a Vancouver pill addict, moves to Sage City determined to build a better life for herself. Co-worker and fellow Mennonite Simon loves her courage — and her. But marrying him comes with a pushy, sanctimonious mother-in-law, Adeline. She manipulates Susie and Simon into leaving Sage City and moving to her Saskatchewan farming community. There, a shocking secret plunges Simon into depression and drinking. As Susie struggles to find a way forward, she gains a new empathy, resilience, and understanding of faith and freedom.”

The 264-page novel features some of the same characters as Schemenauer’s earlier novel Consider the Sunflowers.

Originally from Saskatchewan, Schemenauer is a first-generation child of Mennonite immigrants. Before she moved to Kamloops in 2006, Schemenauer spent over three decades working as an editor and author in Toronto.

She has written 78 books and a novel titled Consider the Sunflowers on topics that include family, community life, Mennonites, history, mystery and adventure. She has articles and stories published in numerous places online, and in print in periodicals and newspapers.

Published by Farland Press on June 17, Song for Susie Epp is available in local bookstores in Kamloops, and can be ordered online from Amazon, Kobo and Indigo.

The author was not immediately available for an interview.
