Kamloopa Powwow cancelled due to COVID-19

The Kamloopa Powwow, which was set to celebrate its 41st year, has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a letter posted to Facebook, says the Kamloopa Powwow Society and the Tk’emlups te Secwepemc Council have called off the celebration to protect the health and safety of those who attend.

The powwow traditionally welcomes drummers, dancers, performers and artists from bands across western Canada. This year’s event was set to take place from July 31 to Aug. 22.

“By cancelling our event, the (Kamloopa Powwow Society) board puts forward the health and safety of all people who take part in our event. It was a difficult but necessary decision to join the efforts of many citizens, communities, businesses and organizations against the spread of the COVID-19 virus," Kamloopa Powwow Society president Delyla Daniels says in the letter.

"The (Kamloopa Powwow Society) would like to thank all of our participants, volunteers, sponsors and spectators for their continued support and we look forward to celebrating the Annual Kamloopa Powwow next year.”
