After two years of cancellations, Kamloopa Powwow organizers have announced the event is returning this summer.
The 2022 annual Kamloopa Powwow will be held July 29 to 31, subject to Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc recreational and facility requirements and provincial health orders, according to the organizer's Facebook post.
"We thank everyone for your understanding that Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc is in mourning and for your continued prayers during our time of healing the Le Estcwicwéý (the missing)," they wrote.
Last year, the event was cancelled as the community was in mourning following the discovery of 215 unmarked children's graves at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School site. In 2020, it was cancelled due to pandemic restrictions.
"Please be understanding that we will be protecting the perimeter of our children, and as a result it may impact some parking and camping areas," the Kamloopa Powwow Society wrote.
The annual event is typically held during B.C. Day August long weekend and is one of the largest celebrations of Indigenous culture in Western Canada, attracting more than 1,000 dancers and spectators.
