January rain is following the cold and snow in Kamloops and the Okanagan

January is returning to its early form with temperatures rising well above freezing in Kamloops and the Okanagan with a good chance of rain early this week.

It has been a month of dramatic changes following a green Christmas. Highs of 6-7 Celsius early in the month were followed by bitterly cold and killing temperatures towards the middle of the month then 15-20 cm of snow as it gradually warmed last week.

Kamloops is forecast by Environment Canada to have a high today, Jan. 22, of 2 C and an overnight low of 1 C with periods of light snow or rain.

Daytime highs could reach 6 C on Wednesday and Thursday although precipitation is not forecast after Tuesday and then it’s only a 30% chance.

Normal daytime highs for Kamloops at this time of year are 0 C with overnight lows of -7 C.

For the Okanagan, the high is forecast to reach 2-3 C today and 4-5 C tomorrow with periods of wet snow mixed with rain today and a 40% chance of showers tomorrow, rising to 70% on Wednesday.

No weather warnings or alerts have been issued by Environment Canada but the Coquihalla Highway from Hope to Merritt is expected to have a mix of snow and rain today and Tuesday, according to the BC Travellers Forecast.

The Okanagan Connector has a risk of freezing rain today and tonight along with up to 4 cm of snow.

The Coquihalla Highway from Merritt to Kamloops is forecast to get 2 cm of snow today, easing tonight with flurries tomorrow.

Highway 3 from Hope to Princeton could get more than 10 cm of snow through Tuesday but there is also a risk of freezing rain.

Highway 1 from Eagle Pass to Rogers Pass could get more than 10 cm of snow through tomorrow with fog patches.
