Jail for amateur boxer who had sex with Kelowna minor

KELOWNA – A 25-year-old Kelowna man was handed a minimum sentence of 90 days in jail for having consensual sex with a 14-year-old girl last summer.

Alexander Schoenherr, 25, is an amateur boxer and self-described 'loner' with no prior criminal record. He pleaded guilty to one count of sexual touching of a person under 16.

He and the victim met through a relative in the summer of 2014 and began texting each other. By early August she considered herself his girlfriend.

Their relationship became intimate in the first week of August and in early September she told him through Facebook messenger that she was worried she was pregnant. The girl's father found the message and ordered Schoenherr to unfriend her and never contact her again. Schoenherr admitted to RCMP he and the victim had sex four times.

Defence lawyer Andrew Vandersluys says the minimum sentence is appropriate since the victim admits lying to him about her age.

“My client does not have any pedophilic interests,” he said. “It was based more on opportunity and proximity than true sexual preference.”

Judge James Threlfall agreed and sentenced him to 90 days in jail followed by two years' probation.

“It’s not really a question of a young person being seduced,” he said. “He’s genuinely remorseful.”
