Thousands of people attended an annual pumpkin walk last night, making it the biggest event in the Regional District of Central Okanagan’s history.

The Spooktacular Pumpkin Walk was held Oct. 30 from 5 to 8 p.m. and saw more than 2,000 people walk through Mission Creek Regional Park, said Isabella Hodson, regional district community supervisor.

Residents dropped off their pumpkins which were displayed around the park. Walkers then voted on which pumpkins were the scariest, most original, cutest, strangest, and funniest.

The district also saw an uptick in entries from previous years with 160 pumpkins, 40 more than the two years prior, Hodson said.

“The event was so busy I know our staff was working until at least 9 o’clock,” she said.

“I’ve never seen such a big RDCO event. I think it’s the biggest one we’ve had in our history and I’m glad we pulled it off,” she said, adding they got the OK from Interior Health. “It was nuts though."

Residents could be seen parking along Springfield Road as parking was completely full in the park and lines were long.

"I think it was so well attended in part because families really miss events, and this one was as safe as could be, outdoors in a park with distancing and all COVID protocols in place. Halloween is so much fun so I think people were really happy to get out and enjoy a safe, family friendly event over Halloween weekend," Hodson said.

Attendees also dressed up in costume.

"This event really brings the community together in the spirit of fun. People dropping off pumpkins were just so excited to have their hard work on display for the larger community," Hodson said.

The event's winners for this year include: Emma Celera with her doll with white eyes inside has won the scariest award, most original went to the fairy garden by Nicholas and Lily, the cutest pumpkin award went to Sheila, Conrad and Hudson Dietrich with their Pokemon series, strangest was awarded to Conrad Deloitte with an angler fish and funniest went to a pumpkin with braces, name unknown at this time.
