Out of 974 COVID-19 cases recorded in B.C. over the weekend, almost one-third, 319, were in the Interior Health region.

There were 398 new cases recorded in B.C. on Saturday, 297 on Sunday and 279 in the last 24 hours, according to a Ministry of Health news release issued today, Feb. 28.

There were 230 new cases in the Fraser Health region, 100 in Vancouver Coastal, 215 on Vancouver Island and 110 in the Northern Health region.

The real number of cases is estimated to be three to four times higher because many people infected with COVID are not getting tested or take rapid tests that are not recorded in these figures.

The slow but steady decline in COVID hospitalizations and intensive care patients continued over the weekend with 549 in hospital today, compared to 619 on Friday.

The number in intensive care dropped to 85 from 96 Friday.

About half the of people in hospital with a COVID diagnosis were not in there because of COVID but were tested after going to hospital for things like surgery, delivering a baby or being admitted to a mental health unit.

There were another 22 deaths over the weekend, including four in the Interior Health region, bringing the pandemic total to 2,873.

The vaccination rate for people over the age of 12 rose slightly to 93.3% with at least one dose but it was unchanged at 90.7% for those with at least two doses. The number of people with three doses increased to 55.7%.
