Interior cities shatter same-day records under smothering blanket of heat

You have to go back to 1898 for the same-day temperature record that Kamloops shattered yesterday.

Kamloops reached a new high of 40.8 C, beating the old record of 37.8 set by a solid three degrees, making yesterday, Aug. 9, the hottest August day ever recorded in the city. Records have been kept there since 1890.

While not quite so spectacular, yesterday’s smothering heat shattered same-day records all over Southern B.C. under an enduring ridge of high pressure, according to Environment Canada.

Kelowna beat its same-day temperature record for Aug. 9 with a reading of 37.0 C measured at the Kelowna International Airport. The temperature on August 9, 1978 was 36.0 C a full degree lower. Records have been kept there since 1899.

Vernon tied a same-day record of 35.4 C set in 2013. Records have been kept there since 1900.

Merritt also edged into record territory yesterday reaching a high of 36.8 C, topping the same-day record of 35.5 C set in 1981. Records have been kept there since 1918.

Environment Canada says the Southern Interior can expect a break from the heat — and the wildfire smoke — as a low pressure system moves across the province beginning tonight. Temperatures are expected to rebound to the 30s by early next week.
