Local Vernon author Myk Richelle is preparing to release her second book in a two part murder mystery series this coming February.

The new novel is titled Into the Shadows, which is the sequel to her first novel The One That Got Away.

Richelle couldn’t be more excited her new book, which is about a rambunctious, dangerous and deadly assassin who roams through Canada and the United States, all while being hunted himself. A romantic twist trickles through the novel.

“I can’t wait to get this into the publication process and get this one out,” she said. “It’s probably some of my best work. I’m very proud of myself for it.”

After four and a half years and about 400 pages later, all that's left to be done is the cover art, which will be contributed by Richelle’s brother who she calls a personal inspiration.

Richelle is a full time photographer with a passion for writing.

“Ever since I could pick up a pencil, I wrote short stories and novellas and poems and all sorts of things since I was like four or five years old. My parents would always tell me that I truly had a gift and that I was really talented at writing. As I grew older, I continued to write and I always, always dreamt of being a published author and when that came true, it was so surreal.”

She said her first novel was a global success.

“I had people in England and Australia buying the book and I didn’t even know how they got word of it, but the very first person to get a copy was in England,” Richelle said.

As her fan base continues to grow, so does the demand for her work. She already has people reaching out and asking about the release of her upcoming novel.

“Another one of my friends, probably one of my biggest fans which I feel weird saying, is constantly telling me how she finished it on her night shift because she couldn’t put it down," Richelle said.

Though not a lived experience, she writes a tale of real life horrors that occur throughout the country.

“It’s not a supernatural or paranormal book. It’s based on real life horrors like kidnapping and torture and pedophilia and sexual assault and stuff like that. It’s got really dark aspects to it,” she said

One challenge Richelle experienced while writing the new book was the passing of her father and the lack of motivation that comes with grief. After writing for about a year, she took six months to a year off from writing all together to take proper time to grieve.

The characters in Into the Shadows are much more evolved since her first novel. New characters have also been introduced that reflect this change in her life.

Her first book caught the interest of movie producers and she had a chance to pitch it to them. She can't say much yet, but is excited about the possibility of her work making it onto the big screen.

She's already planning a third novel in the series and is currently working on four other books.

Richelle takes great pride in her work, especially since each novel took years to write. Her first novel, The One That Got Away, is available online on Amazon and Barnes and Noble.

“I’m very proud of myself and I might be a little biased, but I think its excellent,” she said.
